Health Benefits of Turmeric

Turmeric is the root stalk of a tropical plant that’s part of the ginger family. One of the main components of the spice is a substance called curcumin which has potentially healing properties.
Turmeric contains a wide range of antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anticarcinogenic, antimutagenic and anti-inflammatory properties.
It is also loaded with many healthy nutrients such as protein, dietary fiber, niacin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, potassium, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium and zinc. Due to all these factors, turmeric is often used to treat a wide variety of health problems.

Cancer

Researchers found that curcumin, the main component in turmeric, appeared to block an enzyme that promotes the growth of head and neck cancer.
An independent lab in Maryland evaluated the results and found that the cancer-promoting enzymes in the patients’ mouths were inhibited by the curcumin and thus prevented from advancing the spread of the malignant cells.

Diabetes

Turmeric may help lower the risk of type 2 diabetes. by helping to moderate insulin levels. It also improves glucose control and increases the effect of medications used to treat diabetes.  However, when combined with strong medications, turmeric can cause hypoglycemia. It is best to consult a healthcare professional before taking turmeric capsules.

Anti-inflammatory

Turmeric is one of the most potent natural anti-inflammatories available.Pretreatment with turmeric completely inhibited the onset of rheumatoid arthritis ,in addition, the study found that using turmeric for pre-existing rheumatoid arthritis resulted in a significant reduction of symptoms. Other research shows that taking turmeric daily for several months may improve kidney function for people with kidney inflammation.

Weight loss

Turmeric powder can be very helpful in maintaining an ideal body weight.
Curcumin in turmeric can fasten to capsaicin receptors and increase thermogenesis rates. This leads to greater fat burning and helps with weight loss.
Just like how tumors grow, adipose tissues which store fat cells require angiogenesis to provide the required nutrients and oxygen to adipocytes (fat cells), curcumin is said to have anti-angiogenic properties that could reduce fat mass and inhibit fat tissue growth therefore leading to weight loss in obese people.

Cholesterol

Research has proven that simply using turmeric as a food seasoning can reduce serum cholesterol levels. It is a known fact that high cholesterol can lead to other serious health problems. Maintaining a proper cholesterol level can prevent many cardiovascular diseases.
