Sleep is very important for the mentally and physically healthy. With sleeping our body is recharged after long and stressful day.
During the sleep, millions of processes still happen in the body, helping the cells to regenerate and to repair the damaged tissue.
But, when we don’t sleep enough, these functions fail to be finished on time, and we have difficulties to concentrate, and what’s more important there are numerous side effects that can be dangerous.

The strongest evidence of the correlation of heart problems and lack of sleep has been found at the annual meeting of the European Society of Cardiology.
The team of researchers, for 14 years, followed 657 Russian men at 25-64 aged. They have found that 2/3 of the people that have experienced a heart attack, had a sleeping issue.
Those men who had sleep disorders, had 1.5 – 4 times higher risk of a stroke, and 2.6 times greater risk of myocardial infarction.
Obesity and Diabetes
Researchers from the University of Chicago did a study that showed the link between poor sleep and obesity and diabetes.
They examined 19 male patients and discovered that the patients who slept for 4 hours for 3 nights had increased the levels of fatty acid between 4 a.m. – 9 a.m. This increase was 15-30 % more than to those who slept 8.5 hours.
Researchers also discovered that the high levels of fatty acid indicated an increased degree of insulin resistance.
According to a study made in 2014, excess sleep and sleep deprivation can lead to ulcerative colitis, known as Crohn’s Disease.
Researchers studied patients in the Nurses’ Health Study since 1976 and also since 1989. They discovered that the possibility of getting ulcerative colitis is higher if a sleep per night is 6 hours or less.
They also found that there is also a higher risk of developing this disease if a sleep is 9 hours.
So, the proper amount of sleep is between 6 and 9 hours.
Scientists at John Hopkins University in 2013 study have found that sleep is of big importance of the brain to remove the “cerebral waste” that can accumulate and cause dementia.
In this study were involved 70 adults between 53-91 ages. The lack of sleep led to bigger amounts of beta-amyloid deposition in the brain.
This compound as a definitive marker of Alzheimer’s, is showing that the lack of sleep stops the brain to remove this form of “cerebral waste.”
A study published in 2013 in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, showed that patients with a lack of sleep had an increased occurrence of prostate cancer.
There were followed 2.425 Icelandic men of ages between 67- 96, for 7 years. Researchers found that the risk of prostate cancer is increased in 60 % of men who had sleep issues.
In the case of people who had difficulty staying asleep, the number doubled. The link has been associated to melanin- sleep hormone.
People that were exposed to too much artificial light, had sleep deprivation and more aggressive tumor growth, while the bigger melatonin levels suppress tumor growth.
Researchers at the Stanford University of Medicine led a study that lasted for 10 years with 420 participants involved.
20 of the participants who had lack of sleep committed suicide, which showed scientists that the people with sleeping deprivation were 1.4 times more prone to commit suicide.
